Crocus sativus - Saffron
Saffron (Crocus sativus) is one of my favourite herbs to use clinically. While it offers a range of beautiful benefits … from supporting cognition, eye health, digestion, to easing PMS … saffron is best known for its profound effects on mental wellbeing.
Traditionally, the rich golden orange/red threads of saffron were associated with its symbolic appeal of uplifting spirits and curing melancholy. Fast-forward and its potency remains to be true…Peer-reviewed trials and meta-analyses (PMID: 31475623, PMID: 32221179) show saffron can significantly reduce depressive symptoms, performing better than placebo and comparable to antidepressants. Its active compounds appear to influence serotonin activity, inflammation, and oxidative stress… all of which play roles in mood regulation.
Promising early research also shows saffron as a supportive herbal medicine in treating ADHD … though studies are still small and preliminary.
So much more than a culinary herb!
Note ~ I acknowledge treating mental health can be complex, and I’m not suggesting it should replace prescribed medication or therapy. However, saffron can be used as a supportive and evidence-informed adjunct. Always seek guidance from a qualified practitioner before starting any herbal medicine.
