The thyroid, and why it matters

This small, butterfly-shaped gland at the base of your throat is delicate in size, but it holds immense power over your body’s inner workings. For example, your thyroid quietly directs:

~ Metabolism and energy – how efficiently your body converts fuel into vitality

~ Mental health, body temperature, and weight

~ Reproductive health – supporting fertility, pregnancy, the postpartum and menopause journey

~ Vital functions – from heart rate and digestion to memory and mental clarity

Think of it as your body’s internal control centre - keeping countless systems in harmony. When it falls out of balance, the effects can ripple widely, showing up as (for example) deep fatigue, brain fog, erratic mood changes, weight fluctuations, cycle irregularities / reproductive hormonal imbalance.

Because the thyroid touches nearly every system - noticing and caring for it is essential. Supporting thyroid health can be complex if left untreated, but there are simple, practical steps you can take everyday:

~ Manage stress - Chronic stress can suppress thyroid function, choose the tools that work for you

~ Choose thyroid-supportive foods - Seaweeds (such as nori or kelp), seafood (particularly oysters), avocados, Brazil nuts, spirulina, liver, eggs, dairy, nuts, and seeds provide key nutrients

~ Check supportive nutrient status - Key minerals like iodine, selenium, magnesium, and iron play vital roles in thyroid health. Regular blood work can highlight deficiencies, and supplementation may be beneficial if levels are low

~ Check in regularly - Don’t wait for symptoms to appear. Including thyroid screening in your routine blood tests can help catch imbalances early (start with TSH, T3 and T4). This is especially important if you’re planning to conceive, navigating postpartum or menopause, or struggling with low vitality.

It’s worth noting that thyroid conditions including Hashimoto’s, Graves’, and thyroid cancer are far more common in women than men. If you’ve tried it all but you’re still struggling to understand what the missing link is … checking your thyroid status might just hold the answers.
